Arnold of Brescia

Arnold of Brescia
(c. 1100–55)
   Heretic.
Little is known of Arnold’s early life. He is thought to have been born in Brescia and to have been a student of Peter abelard at the University of Paris. He then joined the Canons Regular. He achieved notoriety by arguing that auricular confession was unnecessary, that the sinfulness of the priest could invalidate the Sacrament and that Christians should not exercise worldly power or amass material possessions. As a result of the efforts of St bernard of clairvaux, these teachings were condemned, together with those of Abelard, in 1140 at the Council of Sens. Subsequently, Arnold argued that the Pope should abandon all temporal power and, as a result, he was excommunicated by Pope Eugenius III in 1148. In 1152 he was handed over by the Emperor Frederick barbarossa to the Prefect of Rome. He was executed and his ashes were thrown into the River Tiber. After his death a movement grew up, known as the Arnoldists, which stressed the desirability of Christians abandoning worldly wealth. Arnold was one of several mediaeval thinkers who suffered for their attempts to bring the Church back to the New Testament ideal of poverty.
